I graduated from Ferris State University in 2001 with an AAS Degree in Health Information Technology.
It was in a coding class that I first leaned about cancer registry and the dire need for more registrars
(thank you Professor Marie Sickelsteel!). I knew immediately this was my calling but later found no job openings.
My internship was at Mary Free Bed in Grand Rapids and I was hired full time upon completion.
One year later I accepted a job closer to home with a multi-facility physician-based practice
as their Corporate HIM Supervisor/ HIPAA Privacy Officer. I was 2 years into this role when I
incidentally discovered a job posting with Spectrum-Health for a Cancer Registrar.
In October 2004 I was hired. While I knew nothing about abstracting and registry
responsibilities I was thrilled to finally be on board. With the tremendous help
and support of my co-workers I was trained and successfully sat for the CTR Exam in the spring of 2007.
On a personal note, I am married and a grandma to two perfect grandchildren.
My interests include reading, cross-stitch, church activities, spoiling my grandkids
and learning my role as your MiCRA Treasurer. Thank you for this privilege!
